Penal Mediation Piloted in Argentina
In the 1990s, Argentina began a series of reform efforts to alleviate corruption, overcrowding of jails and prisons, backlogs stalling the court system, and a lack of faith in the justice system. Among those reforms was the Proyecto RAC (Alternative Conflict Resolution Project), a pilot project in penal mediation.
Restorative Justice Week
Restorative Justice Week is an annual opportunity during the third week in November to publicize and promote the principles and values of restorative justice. Last year eighteen countries participated in observing the Restorative Justice Week

The Restorative Justice Ireland Network (RJIN) was established in 1997 as a partnership between the Extern Organisation of Belfast and the Irish Penal Reform Trust of Dublin. The Network seeks to raise awareness of and stimulate interest in restorative justice throughout Ireland.
Review of Criminal Justice System in Northern Ireland
The 1998 Belfast Agreement set in motion a review of the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland. The Criminal Justice Review Group commissioned to undertake this project released its final reports in March 2000. While not all materials address restorative justice, they offer valuable insights into issues surrounding attempts to transform a nation's criminal justice system.

Dr. Paul McCold is the Director of Research for the International Institute for Restorative Practices, Bethlehem, PA. Ross Green is a lawyer concerned with the damaging effects of jail on people with a special interest in the native peoples of Canada.
